Identifying the Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a rather common sleeping disorder, where a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep. Breathing could stop from 10 seconds to as long as 60 seconds and can recur many times a night. Sleep apnea not only hampers the sleep pattern but also could deprive your body of oxygen. Serious cases of sleep apnea could be fatal.

Some of the common symptoms associated with sleep apnea include the following. Sweating during sleep, gasping, abnormally loud snoring and interrupted sleep patterns among others. Lack of sleep could reduce the concentration making your day to day activities difficult

Sleep apnea might keep you awake all night, leaving you tired and lethargic in the morning. Long spells of head ache in the day time and an increase in blood pressure are some of the other common symptoms of apnea. This sleeping disorder can have serious consequences in aged people, so it is recommended to seek your doctor’s help if you suspect sleep apnea.

Change in life styles can also cause sleep apnea in some people. Obesity and alcoholism can set off sleep apnea in some cases. Daily work outs and a healthy life style can go a long way in keeping you healthy and free of disorders like apnea. However, most cases of apnea go undiagnosed due to lack of awareness. There are three types of sleep apnea symptoms including obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive is the common sleep apnea and its symptoms include excessive sleep during daytime, loud snoring, shortness of breath and headache among others. Loud snoring is one of the most common sleep apnea symptoms and is caused by the relaxed throat muscles, which could cause the wind muscles to collapse with the air intake.

Most of the symptoms of apnea including shortness of breaths and excessive sleep during day time are often misunderstood as that of general weakness, which delays the diagnosis of sleep apnea. Persons suffering from apnea might find it difficult to sleep steadily due to the drop in blood oxygen levels, when the brain instructs the body to stay awake and to resume breathing. The frequent interruptions in the sleep pattern might make the person restless and lethargic.

Sleep apnea demands timely intervention and management as it could lead to many serious problems like memory loss or depression if left untreated. Life threatening conditions like hyper tension and cardiac ailments also could result due to sleep apnea.
